Samenvatting

This book presents the results of a research project conducted for the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), aimed at exploring the links between organised crime, trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants.

Developing appropriate criminal justice responses to combat trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants as forms of organised crime requires a knowledge-based approach. However, one of the core findings of the project is that the evidence-base for criminal involvement in these phenomena today is still woefully inadequate.

This book offers an overview of what is known, what is not known and what should be known on the involvement of organised criminal groups in trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. It explores in detail every aspect of organised criminal involvement in both trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. The significance of ‘un-organised’ criminal involvement is equally explored.

The book entails recommendations for the future of tackling organised and un-organised criminal involvement in trafficking in persons and smuggling of migrants. New light is shed in this respect on the adequacy of the United Nations Convention on Transnational Organised Crime and its Trafficking and Smuggling Protocols.

This book therefore is essential reading for policy makers, judicial and law enforcement authorities, the research community and anyone else involved in or taking an interest in the phenomena of organised crime, trafficking in persons and/or smuggling of migrants around the globe.
